What is a surface antigen?

My labs came back positive for Hepatitis C antibodies, but negative for Hepatitis C Surface Antigens. The nurse on the phone was unable to explain what this meant. I know what an antibody is, but not a surface antigen. Does this mean I'm not infected with the virus? I have an appointment with my doctor next month, but I was hoping for an explanation quicker than that.
