Plastic fumes and cooking = death?

Alright. My girlfriend was baking me some banana bread (sweet, I know) when I caught a pungent smell, and no, it wasn't the cooking. I recognized it at once as the smell of burning plastic/rubber, and questioned her about the source of the smell. She told me that at the beginning, she accidentally dropped an elastic band into the oven along with the bread (note, not IN the bread), but she took it out just before it completely vaporized. I told her to throw out the bread for safe measure, but she is pretty damn stubborn and would probably need some proof and coaxing before she is convinced. I know it may be a stupid question, but would this bread be safe to ingest?
