Problems in my steering column.?

I have a 1991 ford Econoline van. I just had problems with the solenoid and got that fixed and have power but when I tried starting the van and it would turn over. The key turned very easy with no resistance. We are thinking something is broke inside the steering column. Would that cause the easy turn in the key with no resistance and the van not starting?
